Many jobs involve a degree of manual handling. For those in the health care industry, there is generally a high degree of manual handling required on a daily basis to complete the tasks required.
In a study on work-related injuries by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2013, community and personal service workers employed in the health care and social assistance industry were identified as experiencing a high degree of work-related injuries, with highest degree of injuries sustained through ‘lifting, pushing, pulling or bending’ as well as repetitive movement … in other words … MANUAL HANDLING.
In 2011, new workplace health and safety laws commenced to harmonise occupational health and safety laws across Australia. The Workplace Health and Safety Legislation includes a model WHS Act, Regulations and Codes of Practice.
The WHS Act (2011) provides a balance and nationally consistent framework to protect the health, safety and welfare of all workers and workplaces, setting out work health and safety duties for organisations, employers and employees alike. Included in these duties is the requirement to provide any information, training, instruction or supervision that is necessary to protect all persons from risks to their health and safety (WHS Act 2011: Sect. 19). Further to this is the recommendation within the Hazardous Manual Tasks Code of Practice (2011) to minimise a risk through provision of information, training and instruction if the risk of a MSD remains after higher level control measures have been implemented.
TOTAL REHAB™ has developed a health industry specific, interactive manual handling training course that aims to educate participants in a fun and energetic manner on how to complete their work in the safest possible manner through the risk management process. Included in the training are practical activities to help remember elements of safe work practices such as identifying risks, performing manual handling tasks safely and maintaining correct postures.
With over 10 years’ experience as a manual handling consultant in the health care industry, TOTAL REHAB™ are able to provide organisational specific manual handling training and risk assessments to suit your needs.
The training provided by TOTAL REHAB™ incorporates best practice standards through implementation of National Standards and Codes of Practice specific to the industry such as the National Code of Practice for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders from Performing Manual Tasks at Work (2007) and Hazardous Manual Tasks Code of Practice (2011).
